I was awarded in 2022 the St Hughs Foundation Artists Respond grant.
This project was a contemplative study of the farmed landscape of Holme Fen- Cambridgeshire, with emphasis on both natural and man-made lines that make up the fabric of the Fens. Holme Fen was declared a Natural Nature Reserve in 1952 and currently managed by Natural England and The Wildlife Trust and is the lowest point in Britain and still sinking. The silver birch forest, England’s finest-that surrounds the farmland has developed naturally as a result of the Whittlesey Mere Drainage Scheme. The vast open farmed landscape, uninterrupted skies, ditches, reeds and trees are the few elements that make up the compositions. The minimal colour palette is accentuated by the snow; the rich dark ‘black gold’ soil is a prominent feature of the farmland. The light and clouds add sensitivity with their ever-changing forms and movement.
